Gifted Assessments

Is my child gifted? Maybe you’ve noticed your child is outperforming their peers in their developmental milestones. Or maybe you’ve noticed they are excelling academically and starting to complain about boredom at school. There are a number of things you may have observed that indicate your child may be a gifted learner, such as advanced vocabulary for their age, ability to learn new things quickly and without a lot of repetition, high levels of curiosity, ability to retain a variety of information, and the ability to think abstractly, logically, or creatively.

Giftedness is identified when a child’s intellectual ability (FSIQ) or General Ability Index (GAI) falls in the range of 130 (+/- 5). Gifted testing is helpful in determining whether a child would qualify for access to educational programs, specifically catered to children who are identified as gifted. Entrance into both Westmount Charter School and the CBE Gifted and Talented Education program (GATE) require IQ tests completed by a psychologist. The most common tests administered are the WISC-V or the WPPSI-IV (for IQ testing or cognitive testing) and the WIAT-III (for an academic evaluation). As part of the application process, Westmount Charter School requires only IQ testing whereas GATE and the CSSD Gifted Programs requires both IQ and academic testing.
